I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Tanya Polonenko for my mentorship visit! She is an
accomplished optometrist who specializes in binocular vision, low vision, and vision therapy.
Through a virtual tour I was able to see Visual Sense Eye Care, which is the clinic she has
recently opened here in Kitchener, Ontario. Every detail of her office was well thought out for
optimal patient care, work space flow, and employee comfort. The bright colours she chose
created an unique environment that was both professional and inviting. While I wish I was
able to meet her and visit her clinic in person, Dr. Polonenko did a wonderful job of showing
me around with her camera, telling me about herself, and answering all my questions! I was
most interested to learn about her specialties; including the residency programs she
attended and the apprenticeships she is now conducting as a supervisor. I was grateful to
have her expertise and now know of more opportunities for optometrists following
graduation. She told me about her experience starting up a business and running it, which is
something I aspire to do in the future. At Visual Sense Eye Care, she manages multiple
vision therapists, opticians, and receptionists all while seeing her own patients! I would like
to extend my gratitude to her for taking the time to talk to me, especially on a Friday evening
after an ocular emergency! I was truly inspired by Dr. Polonenko and I now have a new role
model.
