UW Mentorship: Dr. Ryan Bowser

Written by: Fatima Mourtada

Today, I had the privilege of connecting with Dr. Bowser, an accomplished optometrist who graduated with his OD degree from Pacific University in 2009. Following his studies, he returned to Ontario, where he has built a successful career and currently serves as an Optometrist and a Consultative Advertising Committee Representative for IRIS. Our discussion was a fascinating look into his journey from studying in the U.S. to practicing in Canada.

Dr. Bowser shared his experience of transitioning back to Ontario during a pivotal time for optometry in the province. When he returned, Ontario had recently expanded the scope of practice, allowing optometrists to prescribe medications—a skill he had already acquired during his OD training. This seamless transition into the workforce provided him with an edge as he began his career here.

We also delved into the intricacies of opening a private practice. Dr. Bowser was generous with advice on what new graduates should consider when job hunting and the key attributes to seek in potential employers. He encouraged me to gain practical experience in various practices over summer breaks to build a strong foundation. This hands-on exposure, he emphasized, would help me gain insights into different practice environments, ultimately guiding me toward my ideal career path.

Thank you to CAOS and Dr. Bowser for this incredible mentorship experience!
