UW Mentorship: Dr. Kelly Lee

Written By: Sophia Bachetti

I had the pleasure of virtually meeting Dr. Kelly Lee for my mentorship session. Dr. Lee completed her Doctor of Optometry at the University of Waterloo, then completed a residency in vision therapy, rehabilitation and pediatrics at Pacific University in Portland, Oregon. Currently, she is a private practice owner of Tonic Eye Care & Vision Therapy located in Toronto.

I had a great discussion with Dr. Lee regarding the different specialities within optometry. She discussed what enticed her to pursue a residency in pediatrics and vision therapy, and how she applies that knowledge in her clinic today. If not doing a residency, Dr. Lee mentioned students can gain information on subspecialities in optometry through courses or seminars.

When navigating the job market post-graduation, Dr. Lee gave advice on trying different modes of practice until finding what you like and dislike. In addition, to keep an open mind when exploring what city to work in. As she worked as an associate before opening her practice, she was able to gain valuable knowledge and experience before becoming a practice owner. She also gave me advice on maintaining a work-life balance as an associate or owner.

Overall, I am thankful to Dr. Lee for giving me this opportunity to gain valuable insights into optometry through this mentorship session.
