November 2017: Leanne Leung

Leanne Leung has been selected as the Student Doctor of the Month for November. She is currently a third-year student at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She was born and raised in Toronto and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Waterloo. In addition to her Optometry degree, Leanne will graduate with a Master’s of Public Health as a dual degree from MCPHS. While at Waterloo, Leanne was the President of the Pre-Optometry club and Students Offering Support. She also volunteered with CNIB and worked at the UW Optometry Clinic which furthered her passion for Optometry.

She continued her club involvement when she came to MCPHS and is currently the President of CAOS for her school. Leanne enjoys attending Optometry conferences and is a student fellow of SAAO. She is actively involved in SAAO’s “WalkFit”, which is a program that seeks to include the low vision population in physical activity. She also participates in community outreach events such as vision screenings for the Worcester community. Leanne is also a member of the Private Practice Club and was nominated as “Member of the Month” in June.

Leanne’s passion for Optometry began at a young age as her grandmother was born into poverty with amblyopia and was not able to get the necessary treatment. Her grandmother has taught her a lot in life and she wants to use those life lessons to advocate for early detection of visual impairments. She pursued a dual degree to help make her a more well-rounded physician and improve public health policy in regard to Optometry. She has a strong passion to help people and is a very driven and motivated leader. Leanne is very excited and plans to return to Canada to practice Optometry and give back to the community.
