Genevieve Collette, or Gen for short, grew up playing in the snow in Manitoba before deciding to follow her love of volleyball to Kentucky’s Campbellsville University, where she later graduated with her BSc in Biology. Thereafter Gen chose to pursue her dream of becoming an optometrist and was accepted to the College of Optometry at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in 2014. Currently in her fourth year, Gen hopes to graduate this May and plans to return to Canada to practice.
Gen is a very dedicated student and has received honours in primary care, optical, contact lens, and pediatric rotations; her other achievements include citations on the Chancellor’s and Dean’s list, and being awarded the A.H. Basman, OD Scholarship from Manitoba Association of Optometrists. In addition, Gen is an active member in multiple clubs at NSU and was NSU CAOS’ president last year. Even with all of these responsibilities, she still demonstrates compassion and service to the community by volunteering for vision screenings, Special Olympics, Dining in the Dark, and tutoring for students as part of the Beta-Sigma Kappa Honor Society. Finally, Gen is currently working together with Dr. Shechtman, Dr. Reynolds, and Dr. Makhlouf in an ongoing study about “the incidence of increased intraocular pressure and glaucoma incisional surgery following treatment with OZURDEX ® (dexamethasone intravitreal implant) in clinical practice.”
Gen has really grown since her first year of optometry school and has found her niche in contact lenses and working with individuals who have special needs. Gen’s upbeat attitude and passion knows no limits and reaches outside of optometry to her love for volleyball, friends, and family. We cannot wait to see how her passion continues to grow to further contribute in the advancement of the Optometry profession.
