August 2022: Khaled Farhat

Khaled Farhat is currently a 3rd year optometry student at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico. Khaled was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. Where he completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences with a minor in psychology. As we all know, the life of an optometry student is incredibly demanding and potentially stressful, for Khaled this is no different, so to de-stress Khaled often likes to indulge in his passions for hockey, hiking and food. Khaled’s interest in optometry began early on in life as

a kid he found that his performance in hockey was constantly hindered by his vision, as he couldn’t see the hockey puck. However, he was amazed to discover the impact that a pair of glasses could have on both his vision and his performance on the ice. It was this experience that steered Khaled towards pursuing a career in optometry. In this regard, Khaled would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Sara Constantine for her help in guiding his first steps towards a career in optometry.

During his studies at the IAUPR Khaled has proven himself to be an exemplary student by receiving the cum laude award during his first year. Khaled has also proven that he has a passion for helping his fellow classmates as he has participated in the welcoming committee for incoming students for two consecutive years. Being a 3rd year student Khaled recently had his first official clinical experience attending to patients. This clinical experience has helped him develop a particular interest in the subspecialties of contact lenses and sports vision. Ever adventurous, Khaled hopes to see more of the world and broaden his horizons, both as a person and as an optometrist, during his 4th year clinical rotations.

Along his journey to becoming an optometrist Khaled has shown himself to be a hard working and capable student with an immaculate work ethic that does not hesitate to help his fellow classmates in need. In clinic he has also shown outstanding professionalism and skill. As for his plans for after graduation Khaled intends to keep an open mind as to where his career in optometry will lead him. wherever his path may lead him in the future I am sure that he will be an outstanding optometrist that will strive to provide the utmost in quality care for his patients.
